Help Our County’s Most Vulnerable Children on #GivingTuesday

With the holidays rapidly approaching, the season for giving has begun. Everyone is familiar with Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, how many know what Giving Tuesday is? It is a movement to create a national day of giving. Giving Tuesday is the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and this year occurs on November 28th.

In 2012, Giving Tuesday was started by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation. A large number of organizations, including GoogleMicrosoftSkypeCiscoUNICEF, the Case Foundation, as well as others have joined as partners.

#Giving Tuesday is our chance to give back  to the community—to charities and organizations that work every day of the year to help those in need. As an anecdote to the commercialization and consumerism of the season, this day brings together people from across the globe in generosity and giving. Join us in this worthy effort and spread the word about Giving Tuesday. The more people who are aware of this special day, the more successful the celebration of kindness.

Globally, #Giving Tuesday is working with the United Nations Development Programme, TechSoup Global, to recognize local heroes and engage communities around the world. Australia, Germany, Ireland and other countries are involved in Giving Tuesday.

Contributions have steadily increased from approximately $10.1 million (processed through Blackbaud, the biggest donation processor) in 2012 to $26.1 million in 2014. So, reception of this day of giving has been excellent, but the numbers of those in need have risen, too.

Giving Tuesday is a relatively new tradition to add to the holidays. As you choose your holiday presents, decorate your tree, and contemplate your holiday feast, take a moment to select an organization for your contribution to those not as fortunate.

As you consider where to make your donation, please think about CASA.  Our volunteers advocate for abused and neglected children in foster care – protecting their best interests, giving them a voice in court, and providing hope in a very traumatic time in their lives.  When a child enters the foster care system because his or her home is no longer safe, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer, a Court Appointed Special Advocate®, or CASA.

CASA trains and supports adults who fight for the child’s right to be treated with dignity and grow in a safe and loving environment. We are instrumental in the placement of these children in permanent homes that offer the affection and security they need. If you’d like more information, please contact us:
