NEEDED: Education Committee Volunteers

Hello Advocates!

Kids in a classroomChildren in care often fall behind in school due to their life experiences, trauma behaviors, unaddressed disabilities, truancy, and mobility. Our Advocates are a wonderful resource for building networks to meet the unique needs of children in care. I would like to call on willing Advocates with experience in education (teachers, school administration, school counselors, education advocates, SPED professionals, etc..) to serve on the Education Committee. Our vision is that this committee will be able to assist Advocates with their interactions with school districts.

Some examples of the areas the committee will address include:

  • Requesting special education evaluations and services
  • Providing ARD and 504 meeting accompaniment
  • Building trainings on specific disabilities within the classroom such as Dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder, or sensory issues
  • Accessing school records
  • Moving between schools
  • Transitioning from high school to college or vocational training programs
  • and so on…..

I imagine the time commitment will be a quarterly meeting, possible accompaniment to some ARDs/504 Meetings, any time contributed to building educational trainings, and advising Advocates on request. Of course, this proposed schedule/activities can be built upon or revised by the committee once convened. I hope to begin meeting in February.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions and/or if you would like to join this team. I can be reached by email at Kristy@CASASpeaks4Kids.com or by phone at 281-414-4375. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,
